WHY?

Is not only a question (asked incessantly by curious three-year-olds) it’s the title of one of the most popular songs by one of my all-time favorite Christian groups—4Him. I was privileged to hear them perform it in concert several times. The lyrics ask…

Why, do the rainy days have to come
When the storm clouds hide the sun
I wanna know why.

I’m sure over the years this song has comforted countless people because it expresses the honest questions so many of us have in times of grief or in the midst of a trial. And by asking these questions, it assures us that we are not alone; it’s okay to ask the questions--to wonder, why. (Click here to listen)

Is that what your songs do? Do you write music that provides encouragement and reassurance? Do your songs remind your listeners of God’s grace and His unfailing love?

Or do your songs serve a different purpose?

Maybe your songs convey the gospel to the lost in a way that is clear and inviting. Or perhaps you write songs that challenge Christians to live more like Jesus.

Through the centuries Christian music has moved multitudes to the altar, drawn us back from the depths of despair, brought us boldness and given us courage, driven us to our knees in repentance, and left us prostrate before the throne of Almighty God.

How amazing and humbling it is to think that God can use our songs to touch people in such profound ways! We truly have a holy calling and a sacred responsibility.

And so my fellow songwriters, as we’re setting goals and making resolutions this new year, let’s remember to ask God to give us a vision for our songs and for those He wants to reach through our music.

We’ll take some time to share at our next meeting.
